At 1,818 metres, Pico do Arieiro is Madeira’s third-highest peak and one of the island’s most breathtaking sunset spots. Located in the central mountain massif, it offers sweeping views that on clear days stretch as far as Pico Ruivo, the surrounding ridges, the north and south coasts, and even the Desertas Islands on the horizon.
The experience includes a memorable walk along a section of the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, one of Madeira’s most iconic trails. Along the way, you’ll reach two landmarks: Ninho da Manta, a natural viewpoint, and the famous Stairway to Heaven, a dramatic succession of stone steps descending sharply along a ridge, creating one of the island’s most photogenic scenes.
As the light softens, the ridges and peaks are painted in golden hues. Cool breezes sweep through, while clouds often drift between valleys, creating a natural spectacle that changes minute by minute. The return to Pico do Arieiro coincides with the highlight: the sun sinking below the horizon, colouring the sky in shades of orange, pink and purple, while a sea of clouds glows below, giving the impression of floating above infinity.
Hiking Transfers ensures round-trip hotel transport, making the journey to the top as comfortable as it is unforgettable. An experience that blends adventure, contemplation and the privilege of witnessing a sunset literally above the clouds.
